Alternative Poultry Production Systems

Alternative Poultry Production Systems

Alternative poultry production systems encompass a variety of methods outside of traditional factory farming, aiming to address concerns such as animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and food safety. These systems prioritize factors such as outdoor access, natural behavior, and less reliance on antibiotics and chemicals. Here, we will review different chicken production methods, discussing their features, benefits and challenges.

Free-range systems allow birds to roam freely, providing access to natural foraging behavior.
Benefits: Improved animal health due to different diets and exercise, improved egg/meat taste and nutritional quality, potential environmental benefits by reducing reliance on in-house systems.

Pasture-Raised Systems

Similar to the free sort method, but with the removal of folders for external access and leaf selection. Birds often roam the pasture to maximize new opportunities and steps.
Benefits: higher levels of animal health, improved soil and data diversity, higher quality eggs/meat due to different diets, reduced milking emissions and reduced impacts.

Organic Production

Organic poultry production adheres to strict regulations regarding feeding, housing and health care.

Benefits: reduced consumer chemical exposure, animal welfare, support for sustainable farming practices, potential for premium prices.
Challenges: Strict certification requirements, high feed costs, lower productivity than conventional systems.

Agroforestry Systems

Integrate trees, shrubs and food into a single agricultural system. Birds can access shaded areas, forage on fallen fruits/nuts, participate in nutrient cycling through compost storage.
Benefits: Better micro-climate, new and diverse resources, better biodiversity, better carbon transfer, less dependence on domestic resources.
Challenges: Long-term planning required for tree establishment, organizational competition between trees and chickens, management complexity.

Mobile Poultry Units

These systems use coops, or portable shelters, that allow the birds to constantly find new pastures while protecting them from predators and inclement weather.
Advantages: reduced environmental impact through rotational grazing, less need for fixed infrastructure, flexibility in land use, improved soil fertility potential.
Challenges: Initial investment in mobile infrastructure, labor intensive management, potential limitations of scale due to mobility constraints.

Integrated Crop-Livestock Systems

Advantages: Synergistic relationship between crops and poultry, less need for chemical pesticides/herbicides, diversified sources of income, potential improvement in soil fertility.
Challenges: Balancing crop and poultry management practices, potential for disease transfer between poultry and crops, coordinating operations across businesses.
